The Council of Churches of Malaysia (CCM) has just concluded its 12th Triennial General Assembly recently with renewed policy and programme directions for the next three years.
The general assembly which took place in Pulai Springs Resort, Johor, from 23-26 April has gathered more than 100 delegates from all over Malaysia.
With its theme “United to Build and to be a Blessing”, CCM seeks not only to increase its profile as a national ecumenical organisations, but also to sustain a united witness of the church that will speak to issues on local, regional, and international level.
The main agenda of the assembly was re-electing new committee members of CCM that wil serve for the next three years. There were also paper presentations by Prof. Dr, Tarcisius Chin on “Responding to the Challenges for Quality Education, the Churches’ Role” and “Ecumnism in Transition-the New Challenges”. Dr. Chin is the former CEO of de la Salle Institution. He has also been actively engaged in many community and voluntary works such as the Rotary Club and Malaysian Interfaith Network.
Among the guest-of-honor are Bishop Duleep Chikera, member of the Archbishop of Canterbury’s International Anglican-Oriental Orthodox Communion, and of the World Council of Churches Communion on Diakonia and Development, YB Tan Sri Bernard, minister from the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Freddy Long, Datuk Balasingam, Johor State EXCO member, and also Datuk Chua Jui Leng, managing Director of the Pulai Springs Resort.
One of main issues brought up during the assembly is building a new ecumenical centre to effectively carry out the goal of CCM in serving the Christian community and society.
In aiding the CCM’s building fund, there will be a concert in Town Hall, Teluk Intan, Perak, this coming May 12. Among the singers are Jaclyn Victor, winner of the first Malaysian Idol, Juwita Suwito, award winning singer and songwriter, Vincent Chong, winner of the first Akademi Fantasia, and Liang whose R&B album is on Hitz.fm’s Malaysia top ten.
