This past Wednesday afternoon, the founder of Singapore's largest mega-church shared from his personal experience on what it takes to overcome barriers to church growth.
According to Rev Dr Kong Hee, who founded the 24,000-member City Harvest Church (CHC) 19 years ago and is currently serving as Senior Pastor on a non-stipendiary basis, churches don’t grow by focusing on growth, but rather, when they emphasise church health, reported CHC.
Kong was speaking at an elective programme as part of the church’s inaugural Asia Conference, a large-scale event to equip pastors and leaders from across the region.
The pastor urged some 250 pastors who attended the talk to actively review their church programmes and structures and see if there is any obstacle to church growth.
Among the elements of church health, he brought out the importance of preaching the message and making members who live according to it, using the example of CHC. The people are the message, he said.
He also spoke about ways in which churches could become legalistic and programme-based and consequently lose their strength.
Several participants expressed after the seminar that they had benefited from the talk and were ready to apply the strategies to their churches and even help other churches do the same.
Asia Conference 2008, which commenced on Wednesday with an invitation of international delegates and conference attendants, will be led by well-known Christian leaders with an expertise in various fields, who will speak during plenary meetings and topic-specific electives ranging from pastoral workshops to those addressing church administration, personal development, community services, creative arts, and the marketplace.
