Interview: Brian McLaren Engaged with Malaysia’s Christian Leaders

Influential US speaker and author, Brian D. McLaren spoke in Kuala Lumpur recently, at an event organised by emergentMalaysia, Friends in Conversation: A Quiet Revolution of Hope, where he exchanged views on four main issues; gospel, church, discipleship and world, with prominent Malaysian Christians leaders and pastors.

Another issue is the way we counter people from other religions. I believe, as a Christian, Jesus is the saviour and the Lord. But I also believe, as a Christian, I have been called to love the neighbours of other religions - to enjoy them as a neighbour, and to work together with them for a more just world. But to some of my critics, they think that this should not be compromised.

So what lies ahead of you after this?

Specifically I am heading to Australia after this. But generally I will be doing a lot of travelling this year and finishing another book. And next year I am not sure but I am cutting back on my travelling. I will continue writing.

We will see what new opportunities open up. I hope to continue to do a lot of what I am doing now, but to travel a little bit less.


Brian McLaren, born in 1956, graduated from University of Maryland with degrees in English (BA, summa cum laude, 1978, and MA, GPA 4.0, 1981). After several years teaching and consulting in higher education, he left academia in 1986 to become founding pastor of Cedar Ridge Community Church, an innovative, non-denominational church in the Baltimore-Washington region. He is author of several books and travels widely to network and resource the emergent conversation globally.
Recently, McLaren was recognized as one of the “25 Most Influential Evangelicals in America” by Time magazine.
